Talk Title: Wish You Were Here: A History of Knick Knacks
My current research is into the history of souvenirs from earliest times to the present day. In the course of my research, I have taken a number of pilgrimages across the UK and beyond in search of souvenirs, and in the process discovered the multitude of ways in which the souvenir can connect us deeply to place. In this paper I explore the healing nature of pilgrimage and how throughout history the objects or souvenirs connected with such pilgrimages have offered therapeutic benefits to pilgrims - both modern and ancient. From pilgrim badges to the healing waters of spas these offerings have become intertwined with landscapes and journeys, and in turn with people’s emotional experiences in relation to place often creating a heightened attachment to the objects collected along the way.
