Title of Work: In Plain Sight: Unseen

In Plain Sight: Unseen, is a collaborative site-specific project. We have met on Two Tree Island, creating and recording impromptu performances to an accidental audience, for nearing ten years. During that time, we have been examining the transformative power of female ageing, while deepening our awareness and concern for the

environment. Two Tree Island is the crucible of our combined creative practice. The project has evolved, initially we made images in response to our observation of social invisibility that seemed to happen with ageing. When we initiated our enquiry, wewere both menopausal and are post-menopausal now. Two wise women characters emerged. Who, we came to believe inhabit the small intertidal space of Two Tree Island. Having spent time over many visits to the Island we formed a deep connection to this place. This led us to think about the Island as a living being, with the wise women as guardians of the land body.

We reflected on the lack of positive rituals and positive conversation about menopause. We started to create rituals during the impromptu performances. The strong

emotional states that emerged through our preparatory conversations were of grief and fury.  Creating otherworldly characters and costumes allowed us to embody furious beings, protesting at the edges of the landscape. The performances have been made in plain sight of the public, but also, often going seemingly unnoticed. Like the Island with its soft silty banks, gullies and cuts, the work has also evolved over time, with depth and in layers.
